In my book The Technique of Raised Gilding, I provide a variety of methods that can be employed to the surface of the gesso . For whatever reason,(and their are several ) the gesso , in the process of drying, may dry with concavities (lines down the center) small crater like holes, pinholes, or just facial blemishes. All of these imperfections can be dealt with either through polishing or using other methods that can guarantee a clean surface appearance on the gessoed item.  The above demonstration shows a simple polish that produces a gloss finish from a matt surface. Free of any surface blemishes. This is mandatory in preparing the gesso to receive the Gold. Whatever the surface of the gesso appears as, before hand , is what it will appear as after the Gold has been applied.  So any clean up must be done prior to the metal being applied.       WYSIWYG
