Once the gesso has dried in the application stage, and the end user is happy with the way it looks, the gesso must be polished to a high gloss. A mirror like appearance is what we strive for..
Any imperfections such as scratches concavities, pin holes or other blemishes must be either polished out or fixed before we consider the gesso ready for the polish which will set the next stage for the gilding and the burnishing. During the application stage: what you see is what you will get. Its imperative that the gesso look like a sheet of glass then the gilding will mirror that as well as the burnishing.
