This slide presentation will give you an idea why things go wrong when Cennini's gesso is NOT prepared correctly. In any formula that involves materials to be mixed, an ORDER is required. For whatever reason, Hewitt who has been credited with rediscovering and redeveloping Cennini's formula, made a mess out of it. Provided innaccurate chemical as well as historical information that unfortunately is still being used as of this writing.
